/ 01 The name
Kala-X, in two halves.
The name isn't a portmanteau someone reverse-engineered from a domain search. Both halves carry meaning, and both describe the work.
Hawaiian, verb
- To forgive. To let something go rather than carry it forward.
- To untie, to release. Loosening what's bound up — which is, more or less, the job. Most businesses come to us tied to a process they've outgrown.
- It's also used as a given name across a number of cultures, generally carrying positive associations tied to those same roots — art, time, and forgiveness.
The variable
- Exponential. The multiplier. Technology should return more than it costs you to adopt it — otherwise it's just expensive furniture.
- The unknown. Every client carries one variable that off-the-shelf software can't resolve. Solving it is the product.
- In our logo it becomes a framed display letter — the one element the brand emphasises. We use it with intent, never as decoration.
/ 02 Principles
Three things we hold to.
The work is bespoke, so the way we do it has to be consistent. These are the rules the software and the company are both built on.
Engineered
Structure over flourish. Clean data models, exact integrations, considered interfaces, no arbitrary decisions. The craft should be visible in the precision, not in ornament.
Tailored
Nothing generic. Every layout, message and component is fit to the case at hand — the same way the software is built to order rather than configured around you.
Human
You cannot mass-produce the human mind. Plain language, a team you can actually reach, and technology that stays approachable to the people who have to use it every day.
